National 5 Maths
What is National 5 Maths?
National 5 Maths is a key qualification in Scotland, taken from S3-S6. It builds on learning from S1 & S2 and prepares pupils for further study, particularly Higher Maths and courses in science, engineering, and other numerate subjects. The course is graded based solely on the final exam from A - D. Those students wishing to pursue Higher Mathematics will require an A or a B at National 5 Mathematics. All S3 candidates working towards National 5 Mathematics in S4 are following the 2 YEAR COURSE, with everyone else (i.e. S5/6) following the 1 YEAR COURSE. Both courses cover all of the content but vary in order and timings. The course focuses on developing confidence, problem-solving skills, and the ability to apply mathematics in both straightforward and unfamiliar situations. The course is split into three main areas:
Throughout the course, pupils will develop the ability to: ·Understand and apply mathematical skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and statistics · Simplify problems and solve them step by step · Select and use appropriate mathematical methods in real-life contexts · Make connections and use maths to form predictions · Use correct mathematical language to explain ideas clearly · Build confidence and resilience when tackling challenging problems · Develop analytical and evaluative thinking skills · Interpret, communicate, and manage information in mathematical form · Use logical reasoning to justify solutions · Assess risk and make informed decisions · Think creatively and work with abstract ideas · Manipulate abstract concepts to solve problems and make generalisations What topics are included? · Algebra (expressions, equations, and formulae) · Straight-line graphs and trigonometry · Fractions, percentages, and financial maths · Statistics (averages, charts, and data analysis) The course is assessed by a SQA Exam. There are 2 exam papers: Paper 1: Non-Calculator, 1 hour, and worth 40 marks. Paper 2: Calculator, 1 hour 30 minutes, and worth 50 marks. |
