Higher Maths
Higher Maths is a key qualification in Scotland that builds on National 5 and prepares pupils for further study, including Advanced Highers, college, and university courses.
It develops confidence in working with more complex maths and problem-solving.

The course is split into three main areas:

• Expressions and Functions
  Working with algebra and understanding how functions behave
• Relationships and Calculus
  Exploring graphs, rates of change, and introductory calculus
• Applications
  Using maths in real-life contexts, including trigonometry and statistics

Throughout the course, pupils will:

• Understand and apply complex mathematical ideas​
• Use skills in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics
• Develop strong numeracy and problem-solving skills
• Interpret and analyse information using mathematical models
• Think logically and justify their answers clearly
• Communicate mathematical ideas effectively

The course is assessed by an SQA Exam. There are 2 exam papers:

• Paper 1: Non-Calculator, 1 hour 10 minutes , and worth 55 marks.
• Paper 2: Calculator, 1 hour 30 minutes, and worth 65 marks.

This course is ideal for pupils who:

• Want to keep a wide range of career and study options open
• Are considering further study in maths, science, business, or technology
• Enjoy developing problem-solving and analytical skills
